USA: Thousands turn out to greet Pope Francis in New York

Tens of thousands of well-wishers turned out to greet Pope Francis as he arrived in downtown New York, Friday. The Argentinian Pope visited the United Nations and Ground Zero during his daylong tour of Manhattan, ending with a mass at Madison Square Garden where he urged his 20,000 strong audience to show greater empathy for the poor. On his first visit to the US the Pope has drawn praise and criticism for his strident social conscience and attention to topical issues such as climate change. Francis' visit to New York is the penultimate stop of a week-long tour of the US which concludes this weekend in Philadelphia, where millions are expected to attend his papal mass on Sunday.
