SOT, Protesters (Spanish): "We do not want the mine. We have raised our children and we have progressed with agriculture. We work. they think that the mine will give us work? That the mine will create work for like 16.000 workers? It is a lie, a lie. That Mr. Martin Vizcarra is treacherous."

Hundreds of police clashed with protesters who had set up roadblocks to decry a proposed copper mining project in the Tambo valley near Arequipa on Monday.
Footage shows police lines marching along the roadways interspersed with fires, large stones, and other objects put in place to block the roads. One police officer can be seen being helped away by his colleagues after allegedly being struck by stone. Another police officer's shield can be seen with a large crack in it from a hurled stone.
Some protesters commented on the mining project, saying "we do not want the mine. We have raised our children and we have progressed with agriculture. We work. They think that the mine will give us work? That the mine will create work for like 16,000 workers? It is a lie, a lie. That Mr. Martin Vizcarra is treacherous."
Earlier this week President Martin Vizcarra gave the green light to the construction of the $1.4 billion project, adding that the Southern Copper corporation should resolve its issue with the protesters before the project starts.
According to reports, protesters and locals fear the environmental and agricultural consequences of the planned open-pit mine.
