Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Migrants Felipe Gonzalez Morales said "security concerns should not overshadow the human rights commitments," while commenting on the caravan of 3,000 mainly Honduran migrants headed towards the US. Morales was speaking from UN headquarters in New York City on Friday.
"They have to take seriously the requests for asylum that some of them may have, or that humanitarian considerations should also be taken into account, including the fact that many of these people may be escaping from serious risks to their lives," said Morales.
The caravan reportedly reached the Guatemalan border with Mexico, where the migrants are reportedly hoping to obtain transit visas to proceed to the US or seek asylum in Mexico. On Thursday, US President Donald Trump tweeted about the possibility of sending the army to the border with Mexico in response to the caravan.
