Are you a struggling writer looking for literary inspiration? Then perhaps Lake Sevan Writers’ Resort in eastern Armenia, once frequented by the likes of Osip Mandelstam and Jean-Paul Sartre, could just do the trick for you.
Drone footage shows the beauty of the Soviet-era resort, located 70 kilometres east of the capital Yerevan and standing on the southern side of Lake Sevan at some 1,900 metres (6,200 feet) above sea level.
The work on the complex started in 1932, led by Soviet avant-garde architects Mikael Mazmanyan and Gevorg Kochar. Soon after the resort opened its doors in 1937, the duo were exiled to Siberia.
After Stalin’s death Kochar returned to Armenia and he was commissioned in 1963 to finish the interrupted project. In 1969 the construction of the complex was finally completed.
Soviet poet Osip Mandelstam and French novelist and philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre among other famous authors have looked to the Writers’ Resort for literary inspiration.
The guesthouse still keeps up its original function – housing authors who seek relaxation and creative power.
