Governor of the Murmansk Oblast Marina Kovtun told Russian President Vladimir Putin that “the economic situation is improving” in the region during a briefing in Sochi on Friday. Kovtun told Putin that the regional economy was in a better state "than we expected at the beginning of this year," most of which was down to a growth in internal manufacturing. During the meeting the regional governor underlined the importance of the Murmansk government in supporting major investment projects, "including through providing tax benefits." One of Kovtun's key concerns was to boost state employees’ salaries, and the governor informed Putin that with growing government revenue she has decided to move ahead with an increase of 5.5%.
