American and Filipino Marine units performed amphibious landing exercises featuring 2,000 combined Filipino and US soldiers at the Philippines Marine Base Gregorio Lim in Ternate, Cavite, Thursday, as part of the ongoing Philippine Amphibious Landing Exercise (PHIBLEX 16). During the exercises, the marines participated in field exercises and amphibious operations as well as arms training and humanitarian and civic assistance. The military drills are held simultaneously in several military installations in the Philippines. Col. Akira Miyazaki of the Japan Ground Self Defense Forces, expressed hope Japan could join the exercises in the future. The Philippine Amphibious Landing Exercise (PHIBLEX 16) began on September 21 and will last until October 9. Some 650 US soldiers based in Japan's base of Okinawa joined the Filipino sailors and marines as part of the cooperation between the two countries.
