USA: Attorney general condemns ‘sobering’ rise in anti-Muslim hate crime

United States Attorney General, Loretta Lynch, released a video statement from Washington, D.C. on Friday in which she condemned the “deeply sobering” 67 percent rise in hate crimes against Muslim Americans detailed in the recently released FBI 2015 hate crime statistics.
Lynch said the report also showed an increase in hate crimes against “Jewish people, African Americans and LGBT individuals.” She added that the true number may be far higher as many crimes “go unreported out of shame or fear” and urged Americans to report incidents.
There were 5,850 hate crime incidents cited in the report including 257 hate crimes against Muslims, up from 154 in 2014. Lynch said the FBI was assessing whether particular incidents may constitute “violations of federal law.”
