Around 50 protesters rallied outside the Bundestag in Berlin, Friday to oppose an impending vote on a new telecommunication data retention law which will be discussed later in the day. Protesters gathered in the drizzle to stand in defiance against what they see as a move towards an ever growing "surveillance state." One banner read "eventually everything becomes suspicious," while a large telescope and fancy dress figures depicting both German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Vice-Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel were to be seen at the event. German telecom and internet operators could be forced to store customer traffic and location metadata for police investigation purposes. The measure is allegedly meant to help law enforcement agencies fight "terrorism" and serious organised crime. However, protesters believe this is a infringement on personal privacy.
