Italy: Migrant 'volunteers' clean up storm-damaged Florence

Refugees housed in the Tuscany region of Italy are being used by the council of Florence, Monday, to clean up the city after a fierce thunderstorm caused widespread damages on Saturday evening. Migrants are taking charge of the first stages of the clean-up, consisting of clearing away debris, broken glass, branches and mud that fill the city. This issue is controversial, however, as the refugees are not being paid for their work, under the argument that they are ‘volunteers’. It is not the first time that migrants help with community work after similar incidents happen in Italy. A month ago, around a dozen migrants helped clearing up the debris after a tornado battered Venice, although they did it voluntarily according to local media reports. The storm in Florence lasted for two hours, with heavy rain falling on the city causing flooding in many areas and uprooting trees. Hailstones also pounded the city, smashing windows.
