Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met the Chairman of the Presidential Council of Libya from the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) Fayez Mustafa al-Sarraj, Friday, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
The meeting comes as GNA-supported forces battle with both the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in the coastal town of Sirte, as well as the self-proclaimed Libyan National Army (LNA) in the north of the country.
Earlier in September, LNA fighters led by Commander Khalifa Haftar captured the key oil ports of Ras Lanuf, Al-Sidra, Zueitina, and Brega along Libya's so-called "oil crescent" coast. The group later gave control of the ports and oil exports to Libya's National Oil Corporation (NOC), the country's primary nationalisied oil company, but fighting continues in the area.
