Germany: Environmental activists throw boat party in front of Berlin power station

10.07.2016
Around 100 activists occupied the Spree river in front of the Klingenberg power station, in Berlin, on Sunday, to protest against the lignite that it is used in burning processes. Police were present but didn't arrest anybody.
The protest was organised by Kohleausstieg, an organisation that advocates divestment from coal and coal-powered power plants. The Klingenberg power station was supposed to stop using lignite - or brown coal - in 2016, but managed to get permission to continue its activities until 2020.
Activist Eva Ronspiesz said, "Brown coal is the number one climate killer. And Berlin has committed to being carbon neutral by 2050, and of course that won't work with lignite."
