Poland: Thousands march from Auschwitz to Birkenau on Holocaust Remembrance Day
7
16.04.2015
Thousands marched from Auschwitz to Birkenau Thursday to remember the victims of the Auschwitz concentration camp as part of the annual International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Marchers included students for the 27th International March of the Living educational programme, which brings students to Poland every year to explore Holocaust sites and history. This year's march marks 70 years since the end of World War II and the liberation of Auschwitz by the Red Army in January 1945. Auschwitz-Birkenau was a former death camp during World War II and is now a memorial museum. At least 1.1 million people, mostly Jews, were killed at the camp and more than 230,000 children were deported there during the Holocaust.
