Heavy winds and poor weather conditions continued to grip Hamilton on Monday as Hurricane Joaquin travelled northwards past the west coast of Bermuda. Flights and ferry services to and from the British overseas territory were cancelled due to strong winds and rough seas and local residents secured their homes as the storm battered the island. A number of power outages were recorded across the island on Sunday and emergency services were placed on alert. Over the weekend Hurricane Joaquin ravaged the Bahamas bringing category 4 hurricane conditions with winds of up to 100mph (160 kmph). An intensive search is currently underway for a US cargo ship which has not been heard from since the hurricane swept through the coastal area of the islands. The El Faro cargo ship had 33 people on board when it disappeared.
