Around 400 people protested against Russian plans to establish an airbase in Belarus on Minsk Liberty Square, Sunday. Two candidates from the 2010 presidential elections, Vladimir Nyaklyaev and Mikola Statkevich, were in attendance and adopted a resolution against the base, collecting signatures from supporters. Police maintained order at the protest, taking down records and handing out penalties to opposition representatives, some of whom were already penalised back in 2010. Russia and Belarus are long-term partners in various areas including military cooperation. An agreement to set up the base in Bobruisk was announced in September 2015 and is expected to be signed during the next meeting
