The Spanish army erected a military tent to protect 88 loggerhead sea turtle eggs on a beach near the southern city of Valencia, Friday. The eggs were moved from their original nest to a safer beach where they will be guarded around the clock by 50 environmentalist volunteers.
Juan Eymar a marine fauna technician on site outlined the manifold dangers the eggs face on the beach, from predators like "a dog or a fox, digging the nest to eat" to the towels of tourists and vibrations from "passing tractors cleaning up the beaches." Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Aparicio said the army was "delighted to collaborate to maintain and preserve any endangered species."
Loggerheads are considered an endangered species and are protected by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.
