Taro Kono of Japan's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) attended a meeting of the Self-Defence Forces (SDF) in Tokyo on Tuesday, following his appointment as the country's new defence minister.
Kono was appointed as the country's new defence minister as part of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's cabinet reshuffle. Prior to moving to the defence portfolio, Kono had served as Japan's foreign minister.
Abe carried out the cabinet reshuffle on September 11, reassigning or replacing some 17 of the 19 ministers and introducing 13 new ministers.
