During his historic visit to Cuba, US President Barack Obama spoke in Havana on Monday about strengthening relations between the two nations.
While speaking at a joint press conference with Cuban President Raul Castro, Obama maintained that the countries still had their differences. “I've said consistently, after more than five difficult decades, the relationship between our governments will not be transformed overnight," he said.
However, Obama also used the speech to praise "the progress Cuba has made as a nation. Its enormous achievements in education and in healthcare" and stated that "Cuba's destiny will not be decided by the United States or any other nation. Cuba is sovereign and rightly has great pride. And the future of Cuba will be decided by Cubans, not by anybody else."
The US president also indicated that new economic ties are being forged between Cuba and the USA. These include giving Cubans greater access to the US dollar, removing the 10 percent tariff on dollar conversions and deepening cooperation in agriculture and joint ventures.
Barack Obama is the first US president to visit Cuba in almost nine decades, marking an historic moment between both countries since diplomatic relations were normalised last year.
