The suspect in last year's attack on the Borussia Dortmund football team bus has admitted he carried out the attack but denied he intended to kill or injure anyone, in a statement read out during his trial at Dortmund district court on Monday.
The 28-year-old, identified only as Sergei W. and his faced blurred in keeping with German rules to protect the identity of defendants, is an electrician with dual Russian-German citizenship who is accused of orchestrating the attack in order to gain profit from a decline in the club's share price.
The suspect was charged with 28 counts of attempted murder which he denies as he claims he designed the explosive devices in a way "that no harm to people could be expected."
The blast on April 11 ripped through the team bus window, fracturing the wrist of Spanish international defender Marc Bartra and causing hearing loss to a policeman.
The vehicle was en route to the club’s stadium for the Champions League quarter-final home game against AS Monaco.
