23.09.2015
Hundreds of demonstrators marched through Riga to protest against the government's decision to take in 776 refugees, on Tuesday. Activists held Latvian flags and placards depicting President of European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, as German Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler. They began at Riflemen Square and marched to the Liberty monument where they listened to speeches. The crowd, estimated to be 500 strong, chanted anti-government and anti-immigrant slogans, including "against immigrants" and "the Baltic is ours." They also held placards of President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker with 'Hitler moustaches' on. In attendance were members of the right-wing party the National Alliance, who are one of three constituents in the government's ruling coalition. Last week Latvia's government agreed to take its share of refugees under the plan proposed by Germany and the European Commission.
