Yemen: Sanaa businesses forced to switch fuel sources due to conflict

11.05.2015
Owners of a public bath and a bakery in Sanaa showed off the changes they have had to implement to keep their businesses running, Monday, as the city's residents suffer from a shortage of fuel as a consequence of the conflict in Yemen. Mohamed Ghazi, the owner of a public bath, uses motor oil instead of diesel to heat the water, while Abdullah Harazi, who owns a bakery, switched over from conventional diesel fuel to firewood to keep the oven burning. Sanaa has been the target for numerous airstrikes carried out by the Saudi-led coalition, comprising eight other Arab states and receiving logistical support from the United States, Britain and France. The fuel shortage does not only make it harder for people to keep their businesses running, it also causes logistical issues as people are unable to access any transport to get out of the city. According to United Nation (UN) figures, over 1,400 people have been killed and close to 6,000 people injured, roughly half of whom have been civilians, since the Yemen conflict escalated in mid-March 2015.
