01.04.2016
Russia forces in Syria deployed an Uran-6 bomb disposal armoured vehicles at the Hmeymim airbase in Latakia, Friday, to assist sapper units in their mission of clearing mines and booby-traps left by the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) during their retreat from the ancient city of Palmyra.
The Uran-6 bomb disposal armoured vehicle resembles a mini-tank with various tools, ranging from grips to mine clearance devices, able to attach to the front plough.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Head of UNESCO Irina Bokova and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad have agreed on the deployment of Russian crews to conduct mine clearance operations prior to archaeologists' mission to restore the ruins of the ancient city to their previous conditions.
Palmyra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, formerly known for housing some of the best-preserved monuments of antiquity anywhere in the world. Since capturing the city in May, 2015, IS militants have blown up the 2,000-year-old Temple of Bel, and the Arch of Triumph, and have used the Roman-era amphitheater for filmed public executions. The UN's cultural agency described the groups' archaeological demolishing as a 'war crime.'
Syrian forces assisted by Russian Air Forces completely liberated the city and cleared it of IS militants on Sunday.
