Surveyors began work on plans to build an 8ft (3m) tall, €20m (US $24m) reinforced glass wall around Paris's iconic Eiffel Tower, Monday, which will be both bomb and bullet proof.
With the city on high-alert after a spate of terror attacks over the past two years and a chain-link fence around the tower remaining in place since Euro 2016, the wall is being built with the aim of improving security, access and the aesthetics as part of a multi-million euro development plan.
"I don't think it will help the security. If something's going to happen, it's going to happen on this side of the glass wall, as well as if it were on the other side," said one visiting tourist. "It's very sad that they're going to be putting a fence around it or a glass wall that is detrimental to the beauty of the Eiffel Tower in my opinion. It's sad that it came to this."
