Russian pole vaulter and two-time Olympic gold medallist Elena Isinbayeva said she dreams of becoming a "three-time Olympic gold medallist", following her victory at the National Track and Field Championship in Cheboksary, Chuvashia, on Tuesday.
Isinbayeva noted that she was happy about the IOC's decision to allow individual athletes to prove they are "clean" and possibly participate in the Olympic Games.
"This is wonderful news," she said, "and deep inside I hope that I will win my right to take part in the Olympic Games."
However, Isinbayeva went on to criticised the IAAF’s recent decision as "unjustified" and "unjust" towards "Russian athletes who have a crystal clear reputation."
Earlier the International Olympic Committee (IOC) gave the green light to clear individual athletes by their respective federations, which would allow them to participate in the Olympic Games. In this scenario, they would be permitted to compete under the Russian flag, which was cast in doubt by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). The suspension of Russian athletes initially came into force in November 2015 after the country allegedly failed to meet standards set by the IAAF.
