Square Announces New Device for Apple and Android

Just minutes after Tim Cook left the stage at WWDC, Square founder and CEO Jack Dorsey tweeted his own announcement: a new device geared to work with Apple Pay. Square Reader is a tiny square device designed to allow any merchant with a tablet or smartphone to begin wirelessly accepting Apple Pay and contactless mobile payments, as well as payments from Europay, MasterCard and Visa chip cards. Square is giving away the first 250,000 Square Readers, with preorders of the device available for $49. At first glance, the device appears to be a bit of an upgrade from Square's previous $29 merchant reader, which was a bit clunky and not wireless. At just under 2 ounces, the tiny device appears to be Square's most aggressively simple and frictionless merchant payments solution yet.
