Syria: Assad greeted by crowds on Martyr's Day visit to Damascus school

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was met by crowds of supporters during a visit to a school for children of the Syrian military in Damascus, Wednesday, to commemorate Syria's annual Martyr's Day celebration. During the visit to the "Children of Martyr's School," Assad stated that "I wanted to be with you today because I feel overwhelming happiness when I meet the sons and daughter of our martyrs." Martyr's Day, celebrated annually on May 6 in Syria and Lebanon, commemorates the day scores of Syrian nationalists were executed by Turkish Ottoman forces in 1916. Assad also announced that additional troops would be sent to join those fighting rebel forces in Syria's Idlib province. Last month rebels including al-Qaeda fighters captured the town of Jisr al-Shughour in the north western Idlib province.
