Ukraine: Russian trucks stranded at border as nationalists continue blockade

15.02.2016
Hundreds of trucks queued up at a checkpoint at the Belarusian border near the Ukrainian village of Vystopovichi, Monday, as activists from across Ukraine continued to block Russian trucks from transporting goods through the country.
Ten regions, mainly in West Ukraine, have so far joined the action, preventing hundreds of drivers from doing their job, sometimes allegedly at gunpoint. Right-wing groups such as Right Sector are reportedly among the initiators of the action, as one Russian trucker said. "When I was crossing through Ukraine I was stopped by Right Sector and directed into a parking lot," the driver, Vladimir, stated. "We stood there for three days; then some people showed up and said they were members of Right Sector. They were armed, and told us that they do not blame us and told us to leave the parking lot within one hour."
The blockades began on February 11, forcing Russia to take measures to provide the stranded drivers with food and supplies.
Moscow has banned the transit of Ukrainian trucks through its territory due to the blockade on Russian vehicles by the Ukrainian nationalists. Kiev in turn has implemented an official ban on Russian cargo vehicles travelling through Ukraine.
Consultations with Kiev are reportedly underway to resolve the issue.
