Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson condemned American actor Jussie Smollett, arrested earlier in the day, saying that he "took advantage of the pain and anger of racism to promote his career." He made the remarks at a press conference in Chicago on Thursday.
Johnson maintained that the actor "concocted a story about being attacked," noting that his behavior was motivated "because he was dissatisfied with his salary."
The Chicago police superintendent expressed concern that hate crimes "will now publicly be met with a level of skepticism that previously didn't happen," following what he called "this stunt."
Smollett was arrested earlier in the day under suspicion of filing a false police report by staging a racist and homophobic attack against himself.
