Hundreds took to the streets of the Peruvian capital city of Lima on Thursday, outraged by President Martin Vizcarra's decision to permit copper mine construction in southern region of Arequipa.
People marched with flags and banners decrying the $1,4 billion (€1,24 billion) Tia Maria mine project, chanting slogans, outraged by the decision to allow the US mining corporation Southern Copper to start the project.
"They paid [Martin] Vizcarra to give the green light to the project and Vizcarra has no moral quality to continue as president", said one of the protesters, Ana Ochoa, adding that Vizcarra should resign.
Another protester, Marcelino Guillen, added: "We are sick and tired of the transnationals that pollute our territory."
Earlier this week Martin Vizcarra rejected the demand of the regional governor of Arequipa and gave the green light to the construction, adding that the Southern Copper corporation should resolve its issue with the protesters before the project starts.
