The 120-year-old Rubjerg Knude lighthouse was lifted onto rails and moved 70m (230ft) inland on Tuesday. Located on a sand dune in northern Denmark, the 23m (75ft) tall Rubjerg Knude reportedly attracts 250,000 visitors to the area every year.
The North Sea had eroded the coast and bitten into the cliff where the lighthouse stood, leaving it only six metres (20 feet) from the coast. When the lighthouse was first lit in 1900 it was around 200 metres (656 feet) from the coastline. Rather than dismantle it, the 720-tonne lighthouse was lifted onto parallel rails in an operation that took 10 weeks of planning and cost 5m Danish Kroner (€0.7m; $0.75m).
The move is expected to give the lighthouse a 40 year respite after a nearby church had to be dismantled in 2008 to stop it falling into the sea.
