21.04.2016
Clashes between student protesters and police erupted in Santiago on Thursday after several thousand attended an educational reform rally organised by the Confederation of Chilean Students (CONFECH).
Police deployed tear gas and water cannons at masked protesters who threw rocks and other objects at police. Numerous arrests were made during incidents that broke out during the march which saw protesters march along the Alameda, from Plaza Italia to Echaurren.
The protest has been condemned by authorities over its close proximity to the passing of Former President of Chile Patricio Aylwin who died on Tuesday.
The rally was organised by CONFECH under the motto ‘Freedom without transformation is not progress.’ The students and education workers are demanding that the education reforms promised by the government under Chilean President Michelle Bachelet are implemented more quickly.
