Footage released on Friday shows the Iraqi Army continuing their offensive for a fourth consecutive day to regain full control of the northern town of Qayyarah from the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL).
The Iraqi Army attacked the town, both from the ground and from the air earlier in the week, managing to regain control of most of the urban area. They are currently trying to rescue hundreds of families still trapped in Qayyarah as fighting rages in the suburbs. Head of Ninawa operations Mshaal Hamadi considers regaining the city a "deathblow to the enemy," adding that "the people here celebrated the arrival of the Iraqi Army and the anti-terror forces."
Hamadi also stated that "tens of IS soldiers" have died since the offensive began, adding that IS had "collapsed completely," fighting one another before they retreated from the city.
The gains the army have made in Qayyarah are aimed at providing a gateway for Iraqi troops to recapture the city of Mosul.
