The International Olympic Committee (IOC) members are set to green light the initiative put forward by its executive board in Lausanne on Wednesday, to include five new sports at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics.
The proposed package of five new sports is reportedly aimed at attracting younger audiences, including karate, baseball-softball, surfing, sport climbing and roller skating. An official decision will be made at the IOC's session in Rio de Janeiro in August.
The IOC Vice President John Coates, speaking to journalists in Lausanne on Tuesday, said that there is "a wonderful selections of venues that would be ideal" for the newly introduced sports at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, adding that "Tokyo doesn't want to and can't contract with anyone until the [Rio de Janeiro] session gives the all clear."
