Mayor of Cambrils Cami Mendoza gave her reaction, early on Friday morning, to the attack that hit her small town just outside Barcelona overnight after Spain was hit by two deadly attacks on Thursday.
Five suspected attackers were killed by police gunmen in the coastal town early on Friday morning after reportedly driving an Audi A3 into a group of pedestrians, only hours after a similar attack rocked Barcelona. The suspected assailants are alleged to have been wearing explosive belts. Seven people were injured in the ramming.
The attack came after at least 13 people were killed and scores injured after a van deliberately mowed down pedestrians at Barcelona’s Las Ramblas.
The attacks have been claimed by the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS, ISIL).
Police are now linking the two incidents with an explosion that took place early on Thursday morning in the town of Alcanar Platja. It was initially believed to be a gas cylinder explosion, but is now reportedly connected to the assemblage of a bomb by the militant group that carried out Thursday’s and Friday’s attacks.
