Singapore: Joseph Schooling defeats Phelps to win 1st ever gold for Singapore

Hundreds of fans gave a hero's welcome to Olympic gold medalist Joseph Schooling at Changi International Airport in Singapore, Monday, after he defeated legendary US swimmer Michael Phelps in the 100m butterfly to win Singapore's first ever gold medal at an Olympic Games.
Fans began to arrive at the airport from 04:00 local time (20:00 GMT on Sunday) to await Schooling's arrival. Many waved the Singaporean flag and wore white and red clothes, representing the colours of the country's flag.
Singapore's Senior Minister of State Sim Ann, Minister of Manpower and Minister of Social and Family Development Tan Chuan-Jin and Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean, were among those that greeted the gold medal winner as he returned to Singapore.
Schooling spoke with fans, signed autographs and took photos with the public, before going directly to the Singaporean Parliament to meet with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
