Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and the UN’s new special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, both confirmed their commitment to the return of refugees to Syria during their first meeting in Moscow on Monday.
“We noticed a growing understanding of the necessity work harder to facilitate the return of refugees. The other day Arab League countries at a meeting on regional economic issues spoke out in favour of the commitment to helping Syria in facilitating the return of refugees as soon as possible,” Lavrov said.
“My first international stop is obviously for good reasons Moscow," Pedersen said.
“I hope that we together can be able to move the parties so that we can have a relaunch of the political process and based on that, hopefully, pursue the return of refugees and we will see a normalisation of life in Syrian,” he added.
Pedersen took over as UN special envoy from Syria from Staffan de Mistura in October last year.
