German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier participated in a discussion entitled 'The Peace of Westphalia as a theoretical model for the Middle East' as part of the so-called Osnabruck peace talks organised by the University of Osnabruck, Tuesday.
The Ukrainian crisis, the situation in Syria as well as European security topped the agenda of the discussion.
Speaking on Europe's security system, the German minister repeated the words of Egon Bahr, the creator of 'Ostpolitik', that "cooperation with the US is indispensable, Russia is immovable." "Russia remains a big neighbour of the European Union and of Germany. For better or worse the relations with Russia are developing, our security in Europe depends on it," Steinmeier stated.
"Russia has a clear ambition to become noticeable again in this world ... And exactly with this will, Russia has justified its political and military involvement in Syria," Steinmeier continued, adding that "Russia believes that a new order should be set up in the Middle East but in any case with the participation of Russia."
The German diplomat explained Russia's involvement in the Syrian conflict with the fear that "Islamic radicalisation tendencies in the Middle can spread into Central Asia and cross the borders in the south of Russia."
