14.11.2015
Following the attack on Paris on Friday evening, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini called on the international community to join together to defeat terrorism whilst speaking to press in front of Vienna's Hotel Imperial, Saturday, before the next round of talks on the Syrian conflict. "The need for the international community to unite because all the countries here and all the international community is equally affected by the threat of terrorism and the only possible effective response is dealing with that united and dealing united with the conflicts around our regions, starting with this terrible war in Syria," Mogherini stated. "We are together in this. Europeans, Arabs, East and West, the international community is all affected by terrorism and those that try to divide us and spread panic. The best response to this is actually coming together. Coming together, overcoming our differences and trying together to lead the way towards peace in Syria, delivering on this. That's what we are trying to do here today." she added. Foreign ministers and diplomats from Russia, the US, China, Europe and the Middle East are meeting at the Hotel Imperial to discuss ways to end the conflict in Syria. The talks come less than 24 hours after gunmen carried out a deadly attack in Paris that left at least 127 dead and more than 200 injured. At least 250,000 people have been killed in Syria since the conflict began in 2011. At the last round of peace talks, held in Vienna on October 29, diplomats from around the world called for a political solution to the conflict however differing opinions on the future of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad have halted progress.
