Parisians took to Trocadero fountains next to Paris's Eiffel Tower after being warned to brace themselves for temperatures of up to 40C (104F) on Wednesday.
About 50 schools south of Paris were shut down due to insufficient air conditioning to cope with the heatwave sweeping through Europe, which has seen nearly all of France put on 'orange alert' - the second highest warning level. Bathers in front of the Eiffel Tower, however, were not so worried.
One local resident, Mohamed, said of the fountain: "It's so cool. It's a good idea for kids, it's fun, it's free, there's a good vibe here, it's sunny, it's really cool."
British tourist Alexandra also said the fountain was a great way to beat the heat.
"It's a great way to cool down. You've got the amazing views of Paris - what more could you want? Incredible," she commented.
Extreme highs of up to 43C (109F) are expected in parts of France, Spain and Italy on Friday.
