28.10.2016
The number of refugees and migrants camping around Paris' Stalingrad metro station has grown since Monday when the refugee camp in Calais known as the “Jungle” began to be dismantled. Footage shot on Friday in the area bordering the 10th and 19th arrondissement showed crowded rows of tents lining the pavement under the rail tracks.
The Bureau of Migration told local media the number of refugees and migrants in the area had jumped from 2,000 to 3,000 in the space of a few days as refugees were forced to leave Calais arrived in Paris.
The demolition of the “Jungle” camp, where around 10,000 refugees and migrants were living, began on Monday following an order from French President Francois Hollande. The erstwhile inhabitants are intended for relocation at some 300 sites around the country though many were seen sleeping rough as the camp was dismantled.
