Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos dedicated the Nobel Peace Prize to "all Colombians," during his first public appearance after the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s decision to honour him with the award, in Bogota on Friday.
“With my whole heart I am grateful for this honourable distinction. I receive it not on my behalf, but on behalf of all Colombians, especially the millions of victims of this conflict we have suffered for more than 50 years,” he stated.
Santos made an appeal to all those who voted against the peace deal in a referendum last Sunday, saying “I invite everyone to join our strength, our minds and our hearts in this great national endeavour so that we can win the most important prize of all: peace in Colombia.”
Reaching a deal with the Marxist-Leninist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) was a pledge Santos had committed to before his 2010 election victory. On September 27, after 52-years of bloody conflict, a 297-page agreement was signed by Santos and FARC leader Timoleon Jimenez (also known as Timochenko) following almost four years of negotiations.
Although Colombian voters rejected the peace deal between the government and FARC by 50.24 percent, the referendum had a low turnout, at less than 40 percent. FARC leaders have stated their willingness to stick to the ceasefire, despite the 'no' outcome of the referendum.
