12.09.2016
Thousands of protesters marched through the streets of Barcelona, Sunday, to demand that Catalonia be declared independent from Spain. The rally was organised by the Popular Unity Candidacy (CUP) party.
An estimated 800,000 people took part in the demonstration. As the demonstration drew to a close, the protesters burnt Spanish flags and portraits of Felipe VI of Spain, under whose patronage the Catalan troops were defeated during the War of the Spanish Succession.
CUP leader Anna Gabriel, who attended the protest said "we still insist on the map of the entire nation, and we are still taking to the streets to insist that the independence is a way for social transformation, to demand big changes and make it a more equal Republic, a socialist Republic hopefully, and above all a feminist Republic."
This is the fifth year in a row that there has been a demonstration calling for independence on its National Day of Diada. There have also been demonstrations in the Catalonian towns of Berga, Salt, Lleida and Tarragona.
