Hundreds of people remain trapped and rescue operations were underway at Skochinsky coal mine near Donetsk on Wednesday evening, after shelling left the coal mine without power. According to Deputy Defence Minister of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DNR/DPR) Eduard Basurin, emergency crews have already rescued around 40 of the 379 trapped there. Power was cut to three mines when 37 electric substations in Donetsk blacked out following shelling, trapping the miners working at the time. Power was restored to the Zasyadko coal mine, allowing all the 567 miners trapped to safely reach the surface by midday. Shelling intensified in eastern Ukraine on Wednesday, with reports of at least 4 civilian deaths and over 90 wounded, mostly in the south west of the city.
