More than 1,000 activists held a demonstration in support of refugees and against the intervention in Syria, in central Athens, Tuesday, to mark the occasion of International Women's Day.
The demonstrators, predominantly women from the Federation of Women of Greece (OGE) as well as the All Workers Military Front (PAME), rallied through the streets of central Athens before passing the embassy of the United states.
The activists condemned the "imperialist intervention" in Syria and called for NATO to leave the Aegean Sea. President of the OGE Mairini Stefanidi described the refugees as "victims of the inhuman interventions of NATO, USA, European Union and their allies," adding that "we reach out to the women refugees, who arrive in our country with babies in their hands."
More than 13,000 refugees have gathered at the Idomeni camp in northern Greece hoping to cross the border to Macedonia and continue their journey to northwestern Europe. Refugees can wait over 10 days to cross the border, with Macedonian authorities allowing just a few dozen refugees to enter the country each day.
