The Five Star Movement's (M5S) Virginia Raggi was in confident mood after taking a significant lead in the first round of voting for the mayor of Rome, according to exit polls, Monday.
"I'm ready to rule this city, giving back the glory and the beauty that it deserves," declared Raggi, who if elected would become the first woman to be mayor of Italy's capital.
The most recent polls are predicting Raggi to attain close to 40 percent of the vote, with her nearest rival, Prime Minister Mateo Renzi's favourite, Roberto Giachetti winning just 21 percent. If no candidate wins 50 percent of vote, a run-off between the top two candidates will be held on June 19.
The Five Star Movement is an anti-establishment party, which has grown to become one of Italy's largest parties, according to some polls. It promises a referendum on the Euro and a digital democracy, giving voters a direct say in policies.
