The official Xinhua News Agency reported Tuesday that a passenger ship carrying more than 450 people sank overnight in the Yangtze River. The accident occurred during a cyclone in southern China. Eight people have been rescued.
Xinhua said further rescue work was underway but strong winds and rain were hampering the search. The boat was going from Nanjing to the southwestern city of Chongqing when it sank at about 9:28 p.m. The captain and chief engineer were both rescued, and were quoted as saying the ship sank quickly after being caught in a cyclone. Southern China has been pummeled in recent days with punishing storms and massive flooding.
