Hundreds of farmers drove their tractors on The Hague's streets on Wednesday, protesting against proposed climate change measures, such as cutting down on nitrogen emissions, which they believe would go against their benefit.
The farmers drove their tractors in and around the city centre, causing standstills, traffic congestion, and even interrupting the tram circulation in The Hague.
Authorities deployed army trucks to block the roads leading up to the Binnenhof, which is a complex of buildings in the centre, hosting the parliament, the senate and the ministry of general affairs.
"The government has too many rules for the farmers; European rules. But this government, they have more rules that necessary, especially for the farmers and for the future — it's not a good idea," said Pieter Willem Lam, one of the farmers.
