03.06.2015
First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon called for a “double majority rule” in the UK referendum on European Union (EU) membership while speaking at the Residence Palace in Brussels, Wednesday. Emphasising that she believes the UK’s “best interest” is to remain a member of the EU, she announced she will fight for a voting system in which the nation can only leave the transnational body if England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland vote to do so. The First Minister attracted media attention in Brussels on Tuesday after she warned there would be a “groundswell of anger” if Scotland is made to leave the EU against its will. British Prime Minister David Cameron met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on May 29 to discuss reforms within the EU ahead of the referendum. He also met with Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, French President Francois Hollande and Polish Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz on his Europe-wide tour and has pledged to renegotiate the UK’s position within the EU ahead of the referendum on the country’s membership.
