Venezuela: National Assembly postpones President Maduro's impeachment process

02.11.2016
The impeachment process against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was postponed following a vote by Venezuela's National Assembly in Caracas on Monday. The postponement would reportedly open up the possibility of Holy See officials mediating the political crisis in the country.
Hector Rodriguez, head of the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela, said, "The interpolation request for the President of the Republic and the possibility of a political trial in Venezuela are absolutely unconstitutional. They are elements that do not exist in Venezuelan law."
Earlier this week, the National Assembly of Venezuela agreed to initiate the impeachment process against President Nicolas Maduro. It was proposed in reaction to an earlier court ruling which blocked an effort to mandate a recall referendum against Maduro. Maduro's popularity has dipped considerably in the face of a deepening economic crisis. He did not attend the summit.
