According to a statement made by the United Nations on Friday, farmers in earthquake-hit Nepal urgently need $20 million in emergency aid. Funds are needed so farmers can plant crops in the summer and winter cropping seasons, protect their livestock, and avert the threat of hunger facing a million people. The Food and Agriculture Organisation--or FAO--said that in the six districts that were hit the hardest, half of all farming households lost most of their stored crops of rice, maize, wheat and millet. The FAO said that only $3 million of the required $23.4 million for emergency agricultural aid - or 13 percent - had been funded to date as part of the U.N. flash appeal for Nepal. The earthquakes struck Nepal on April 25th and May 12th.
