The victims of the mass killing and deportation of ethnic Armenians by the Ottoman Empire during WWI were canonised during a ceremony at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin near Yerevan on Thursday. The ceremony was held jointly by His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, and His Holiness Catholicos Aram I of the Great House of Cilicia. Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan took part of the event along with other high-ranking dignitaries and guests. At the end of the special ceremony, bells from all Armenian churches around the world rang 100 times. A torchlight procession in memory of the victims is due to take place, departing from Yerevan’s Republic Square on Friday, April 24. The ceremony is part of the commemorations of the 100th anniversary of the mass killings.
